How do I register?
The minor does not need to be present;
Both parents have to be present or just one parent equipped with a power of attorney letter which grants permission to complete the registration.
Parents married with eachother: if one of the parents is not presesnt, the other must write a letter granting permission for the birth registration. You must also bring valid ID (Citizen Card) of the absent parent. Click here for the template of the authorisation letter.
If the parents are not resgistered at the Consulate, they must bring theConsular Resistration Formcompleted, on the day of the registration.
What documents do I need?
Valid identification documents of both parents (Citizen Card, or, if you don't have these documents, a valid Portuguese passport);
Declaration for application for birth registration;
Proof of recent address;
Minor's Full Birth Certificate;
Identification document with name and photograph of the minor. If not, the parents must be accompanied by two witnesses with a valid Citizen Card, or if they are foreigners with a valid passport.
Information relating only to the legalisation of certificates of civil status
United Kingdom British certificates do not need to be legalized or translated into Portuguese; European Union countries (EU28) In the EU, certificates issued in a bilingual format (Regulation (EU) 2016/1191) do not need to be legalised; Member countries of the Vienna Convention (of 8 September 1976) No legalization or translation into Portuguese is required; Member countries of the Hague Convention (of 5 October 1961) Certificates must be legalised by The Hague Apostille;

Translation of Civil Registration Certificates
Foreign certificates must be translated into Portuguese, except for the following:
British certificates;
Certificates issued in the EU model 2016/1191;
Multilingual certificates of the Vienna Convention;
Certificates issued in English.
How much is it? The birth registration is free.
