I am a grandchild of a Portuguese

Who can acquire Portuguese Nationality?
a) When you apply, you have been legally resident in Portugal for 3 years, you are registered with the Tax Office and the National Health System and you have attended school in Portugal or you can prove that you have knowledge of the Portuguese language;
b) When you apply, you have been legally resident in Portugal for 5 years and are registered with the National Health System (or the regional health services);
c) Knowledge of Portuguese;
d) Travels regularly to Portugal;
e) Bought or rents a house in Portugal for more than 3 years;
f) Lives or has a connection with a Portuguese historical community abroad;
g) In the past 5 years, has regularly participated in the activities of the Portuguese community of the country where the person lives, for example, by attending the activities of the Portuguese cultural and recreational association of these communities
- Adults born abroad;
- Grandchildren of a Portuguese grandmother/grandfather who had this status at the time of their birth;
- Anyone who declares that they wish to acquire Portuguese nationality, using the declaration for the acquisition of Portuguese nationality;
- Those who register their birth with the Portuguese Civil Registry
- Whoever has a connection to the Portuguese community, like:

What documents are needed?
- Valid foreign passport;
- Full legalized narrative birth certificate;
- Portuguese mother/father and grandmother/grandfather's birth certificate;
- Declaration for the acquisition of Portuguese nationality (documents available at https://justica.gov.pt/Guias/como-obter-nacionalidade-portuguesa) - this declaration must be signed in front of the consular officer, on the day of booking.

You can't apply for nationality if:
- The person was convicted of a crime which in Portugal is punishable by a term of imprisonment of three years or more.

- In a branch of the Institute of Registration and Notary at the National Support Centre for the Integration of Migrants, in Lisbon and Porto;
- At the Registers of Areeiro Space, in Lisbon;
- At the Odivelas Citizen's Shop;
- In a civil registry office;
- In a Nationality Counter;
- In a Portuguese Consulate in your area of residence;
- Central Registry Office;
- A Nationality Counter.
