Income tax and National Insurance
The Income Tax regime in the United Kingdom (equivalent to the Portuguese IRS) is particularly simple. If you are employed, payment will be made automatically through the PAYE (Pay As You Earn) system and no annual tax return is required as long as you do not accumulate other income. Self-employed people must register as such with HMRC and declare their income annually. The UK tax year is 6 April to 5 April of the following year.
